« Variation is a way of producing notes of multiple musical phrases through changes to a theme. The modifications can be of different natures: melodic (the subject undergoes a modification such as one recognizes it in spite of different intervals), rhythmic one (one modifies the relative values of the notes of homogeneous way or not), harmonic (one modifies of a sensible way the tone and harmony accompanying the theme). These various modes of variation can be combined with one another, and the initial theme can become almost unrecognizable.
